One Way Shave Ice
Chelsia and I had seen the place multiple times and the past
field director even said there was a good shave ice place in town (that we
assumed was this shop), but honestly we were discouraged because the place doesn't
look like much from the outside. At first glance, it looks like a cement shed
that would be used to store gardening tools and maybe a small cooler with some
ice in it. Who would have thought that a quaint little shop of delicious treats
would be waiting inside?
It turns out that the shop isn't even in the cinder block
shed. The cinder block building is completely empty, and there is a door with a
big window adorned with a “One Way” sign on the far side that leads to the shop
itself. The shop looks like something you would find in Europe or the States.
It’s fairly small and extremely clean. They also have the absolute best service
that we have received on island. The woman who works at the counter is both
friendly and helpful. She will offer you suggestions, or even let you sample
the different flavors if you are having trouble deciding what you want. As far
as the desserts go, they have two main varieties of treats; shave ice and
sundaes.
The shave ice is to die for. They start by putting ice cream
at the bottom of a large cup. There is a nice variety of ice cream flavors (chocolate,
vanilla, strawberry, mango, etc.). Next, they use an ice shaver to fill the
rest of the cup with ice shavings then pour a hefty amount of syrup on top of
the ice. The syrup flavors are fairly extensive (passion fruit, strawberry,
cherry, coconut, and bubble gum, just to name a few). This combination of ice
and ice cream sounds strange at first, but it turns into a delicious blend that
resembles the texture of a melting Creamsicle.
The other option is the sundae variety. The sundae we tried
was called the Abby-Ka-Nabby. It was r-i-d-i-c-u-i-o-u-s! It is a double
layered meld of ice cream, bananas, chocolate syrup, chocolate cake, peanuts, and
whipped cream in a giant cup with a cherry on top. Huge. Delicious. Yum! Plus it's reasonably priced at $5.
Chelsia and I both agree that the shave ice is the better of
the two options and the price is on point at $3. Something about it is just special, and you can’t find
anything else even remotely like it here. You can’t go wrong either way though,
and you shouldn't hesitate to stop by One Way for a treat.
